The modernisation process is clearly incomplete - Dave's obsession with fighting old battles such as a social chapter being a case in point. Other examples would be his belief in promoting marriage through the tax system (which, rightly or wrongly, sounds old fashioned and sends out the wrong signal to minority groups) and the remaining tendency to revert to type over immigration etc. I hope one day we will have a centre-right party in Britain which is modern, moderate, green and compassionate and which uses an economically and socially liberal approach (in comparison to the more statist/authoritarian approach of Labour) to promote social justice. I fear, however, that Dave's party is only half way there at best.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
